After 15 years, ex cards are finally returning to Pokemon.
The Pokemon Scarlet & Violet TCG expansion will reintroduce ex cards, and the game’s two new Legendaries, Koraidon and Miraidon, will both be getting their own ex cards.
Yesterday was the final day of the 2022 Pokemon World Championships in London, which meant not only seeing the champion get crowned, but also some exciting announcements in both the TCG and gaming world of Pokemon. While Nintendo showed off a brand new Pokemon for Scarlet & Violet, The Pokemon Company revealed that the trading card game will see the return of ex cards with the Scarlet & Violet expansion in 2023.
Towards the end of the closing ceremony, The Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara appeared on stage. The first bit of news that Ishihara shared was a trailer for the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet TCG, which revealed that ex cards are making a comeback after having not appeared since 2007’s EX Power Keepers expansion.
The trailer showed Koraidon and Miraidon’s cards, alongside new designs for Lucario, Magnezone, and Mimikyu, before revealing that Koraidon and Miraidon’s cards were ex cards. Although Lucario, Magnezone, and Mimikyu’s cards were all mostly obscured, we did get to see the abilities and moves that the two Legendaries will be able to use.
Koraidon’s Ability is called Dino Cry, and it allows you to attach two basic Energy Cards to your Pokemon in any way you like, while his other move is Wild Impact which deals 220 damage. Miraidon, on the other hand, has Tandem Unit as an Ability, which allows you to search your deck for two basic Pokemon, and Photon Blaster, which also deals 220 damage.
For those unaware, ex cards first appeared during the EX Ruby & Sapphire expansion, and the main thing that differentiates them from other Pokemon types is that when an Pokemon-ex gets knocked out, it’ll take up two Prize cards instead of the usual one. Although Pokemon-ex were originally just normal Pokemon with more powerful attacks, they later were given more traits and abilities to make them more unique.
